First impressions
Masthugget is where Göteborg goes out. The primärområde covers the Linné and Långgatorna area, the run of streets, above all Andra Långgatan, that hold the city's densest concentration of independent restaurants, bars, galleries and record shops. It rises from the harbour up the slope of Stigberget, crowned by Masthuggskyrkan, the National-Romantic church whose silhouette is one of the city's landmarks. In 2020 The Guardian called the wider strip the coolest neighborhood in Europe, and it still trades on that energy.
The mood is creative, informal and busy, harbour views one way and cobbled hills the other, with Järntorget at the top of the Långgatorna tying it to the tram network and the rest of the inner city.
This is a young, lively, food-and-culture part of Göteborg, and evenings here are the point.
Who lives here, and what the streets look like
Masthugget skews young: a large share of residents are in their twenties, drawn by the nightlife, the food and the central location. Mean income among residents aged twenty and over runs about 33,500 kr a month (Göteborgs Stad, 2023).
The streetscape is dense inner-city, with ground floors given over to restaurants, bars and shops along the Långgatorna and harbour-front housing below the church. It is walkable and lively, and it is at its busiest in the evenings.
Getting around
Masthugget is wrapped by tram stops, Masthuggstorget, Järntorget and Stigbergstorget, so the whole network is a short walk away, and the Stenpiren river ferries are on the harbour front just downhill. It is flat along the Långgatorna and steep up toward the church, but the everyday level is very walkable.se.

Daily life
Day to day, Masthugget is food and drink and small shops, with a grocer within easy reach and everything else, the centre, Haga, Majorna, a short walk or ride away. The texture of life here is the Långgatorna: coffee and vinyl by day, restaurants and bars by night. For food delivery, Foodora and Wolt both cover the Linné area, and Uber Eats serves the city too.

Schools and families
Masthugget is a young, central district more than a family suburb, and its own schools run to grade 6. For the year-9 years the nearest school is Nordhemsskolan in adjacent Linné, whose leaving grades average a meritvärde of 260 out of 340 (Skolverket, 2024/25). Göteborg has free school choice, so it is worth checking admission before you sign a lease or purchase.
Kids Restricted. Flat along the main streets but steep in places, cafés welcome children, and larger venues nearby have changing tables and family toilets.
Pet Restricted. A dense, hard-surfaced bar-and-restaurant district; the Masthuggsberget heights and the harbour walks give places to go, but there is little enclosed green on the doorstep.
Green space, leisure and eating out
This is the area's strong suit, if not in the way of parks. Leisure means the Långgatorna, the densest run of independent restaurants, bars and galleries in the city, plus the harbour front and the views from Masthuggsberget and Skansberget. Green space is thinner: the rocky heights and the waterfront give air and outlook, but the big parks are in neighbouring districts. Eating and drinking are the reason people move here.
What it costs
Masthugget is not priced on its own; the statistics fold it into the central Linnéstaden band, where flats change hands at roughly 60,000 to 75,000 kr per m² (Boio, Svensk Mäklarstatistik, April 2026), above the Göteborg average of about 51,400. You pay a central premium for the location and the life at street level. First-hand rents are set city-wide rather than per neighborhood, so no Masthugget-specific figure is published.

The honest downsides
The nightlife cuts both ways. The best eating-and-drinking strip in the city is on your doorstep, and so is its noise, especially at weekends.
Green space is scarce. You get harbour views and hilltop outlooks, but for a proper park you walk to a neighbouring district.
Crime and safety
Masthugget is a lively central district in a safe city, and its everyday issues are the usual for a nightlife area, theft and the odd late-night disturbance, rather than serious violence. As in most of central Göteborg you will see some people asking for money around Järntorget and the tram stops, mostly low-level, while visible rough sleeping is uncommon.
