First impressions
Valby is a large residential district in the south-west, about a tenth of the municipality, running from the dense new Carlsberg City District on its inner edge to quiet villa quarters, low apartment blocks and big parks further out. Its name lives in the Danish idioms "ude i Valby" and "vest for Valby Bakke", the back of beyond, because Valby Hill once marked the western edge of the city beyond the cemeteries and the Carlsberg grounds.
It is family-friendly, green and practical, quieter and roomier than the inner bridges, one of the more affordable ways into Copenhagen proper.
This is settled, everyday Copenhagen, and it is honest about being further out and off the Metro.
Who lives here, and what the streets look like
Valby is a family district with a broad age mix, families with children, older residents and a general spread, drawn by space, parks and lower prices. The new Carlsberg City District adds younger professionals on its inner edge.
The streetscape is mixed and low-rise: villa quarters and post-war apartment blocks, the old high street of Valby Langgade, the parks along the Harrestrup stream, and the dense new build of Carlsberg City where the brewery stood. It is walkable around the station and the high street, more suburban toward the edges.
Getting around
Valby runs on the S-train and the bus. Valby station sits on S-tog lines B and C, with Ny Ellebjerg nearby, but Valby is not on the Metro, so it leans on the S-train and buses rather than the rapid ring. The centre is a short S-tog ride, and the airport is reachable by S-tog and Metro with a change.

Daily life
Day to day, Valby is full, practical everyday retail. There is a Fotex, a Netto, a Lidl and a Rema 1000, plus the Spinderiet shopping centre and the older high-street shops along Valby Langgade, practical rather than boutique. For food delivery, Wolt and Just Eat both cover Copenhagen.

Schools and families
Valby is a genuine family district with several folkeskoler, among them Alholm Skole, Kirsebaerhavens Skole, Lykkebo Skole and Vigerslev Alle Skole. Denmark publishes leaving results, the afgangskarakterer, through the Borne- og Undervisningsministeriet, but not at a per-district grain, so we do not rate schools here. Copenhagen has broadly free school choice, so it is worth checking admission before you sign a lease or purchase.
Kids Friendly. A genuine family district of villa quarters and low apartment blocks, with good folkeskoler, big parks and playgrounds, quieter and roomier than the inner bridges, and the trade-off of being further out.
Pet Friendly. A green, low-rise district, with Valbyparken, Vigerslevparken along the Harrestrup A and Sondermarken on the Frederiksberg border giving ample off-street walking, and many gardens.
Green space, leisure and eating out
Valby's outdoors is its parks. Valbyparken, at about 64 hectares one of the city's largest, Vigerslevparken along the stream and Sondermarken with the Cisternerne art space and the Zoo tower on the Frederiksberg border give ample green, and the Carlsberg City District brings new bars and the brewhouse, with Nordisk Film heritage nearby. Eating out is practical and local, on Valby Langgade and increasingly in Carlsberg City.
What it costs
Valby prices below the city average, one of the more affordable ways into Copenhagen proper, though dearer in the new Carlsberg City District. No Valby-specific sale price is published, so we show the Copenhagen owner-flat average of about 55 000 DKK / m² (about €7,400 / m²) ≈ $790 / sq ft (Boligsiden and Finans Danmark, second quarter of 2026), and Valby sits below it. Rent is largely set by the market, and Denmark does not publish a per-city 2-room figure, so we show a market asking level of around 12 000 DKK / mo (about €1,600 / mo) (BoligPortal, 2026) as a guide; much older stock is rent-regulated and cheaper.

The honest downsides
Further out and off the Metro. Valby relies on the S-train and buses rather than the Metro ring, hence the old "ude i Valby" jibe, so getting around leans on the timetable more than in the inner districts.
Mixed, practical rather than characterful. The district runs from smart Carlsberg City new-build to plain post-war blocks and quiet villa streets, so it reads as functional and varied rather than as one distinctive place.
Crime and safety
Valby is a calm, established family district that reads as safe, and Denmark does not publish neighborhood-level crime figures, so there is no local number.
