First impressions
Østerbro lies north-east of the Lakes, between the centre, Nørrebro and the Oresund. It splits into the affluent old core of Indre Østerbro, historically "velhavernes kvarter", the well-to-do quarter, and Ydre Østerbro reaching out to the new waterfront at Nordhavn. Fælledparken, the largest park in central Copenhagen, sits on its western edge, and calm café squares, embassies and villas fill the streets between.
It is expensive and polished, green and quiet, the classic pram-and-playground district of the inner city.
This is settled, leafy Copenhagen, and it is honest that the calm comes at a price.
Who lives here, and what the streets look like
Østerbro is a family and professional district, families with children, well-off professionals and older residents, with some of the highest incomes in the municipality. It is settled and calm rather than churning.
The streetscape is leafy and generous: solid apartment blocks and villas, tree-lined squares like Bopa Plads, the listed cottages of Brumleby, and the wide lawns of Fælledparken. It is walkable, a little more spread out than the inner bridges, and unusually green for so central a place.
Getting around
Østerbro runs on the Metro, the S-tog and the bike. Three Cityring Metro (M3) stops, Trianglen, Poul Henningsens Plads and Vibenshus Runddel, opened across the district in 2019, and Nordhavn and Svanemollen sit on the S-tog. The centre is a short Metro ride, the airport is reachable by Metro with a change, and the DFDS Oslo ferry sails from Nordhavn just to the north.

Daily life
Day to day, Østerbro is solid, polished everyday retail. There is a Fotex, a Netto, specialist grocers and the Østerbro Bazaar hall, and the shopping streets of Osterbrogade and Nordre Frihavnsgade lean more polished than bargain. For food delivery, Wolt and Just Eat both cover Copenhagen.

Schools and families
Østerbro is a strong family district with multiple well-regarded folkeskoler, among them Kildevaeldsskolen, Sortedamskolen and Strandvejsskolen. Denmark publishes leaving results, the afgangskarakterer, through the Borne- og Undervisningsministeriet, but not at a per-district grain, so we do not rate schools here. Copenhagen has broadly free school choice, so it is worth checking admission before you sign a lease or purchase.
Kids Friendly. The classic pram-and-playground district, leafy and calm with strong folkeskoler, Fælledparken's play areas and a beach at Svanemolle; the trade-off is the price.
Pet Friendly. Among the best of inner Copenhagen for dogs, with Fælledparken's lawns, the Lakes, Svanemolle beach and the Nordhavn quays, and more gardens and courtyards than the denser bridges.
Green space, leisure and eating out
Østerbro's outdoors is its parks and the water. Fælledparken is the district's great green, the Lakes edge it to the south-west, and Svanemolle beach and the new Nordhavn waterfront with its harbour baths give the seafront. Embassies, fine dining and calm café squares define the going-out, with Parken hosting football and concerts, so the district is easy to live well in.
What it costs
Østerbro prices above the city average, with Indre Østerbro near the Lakes and the listed cottages of Brumleby among the dearest family stock in the city. No Østerbro-specific sale price is published, so we show the Copenhagen owner-flat average of about 55 000 DKK / m² (about €7,400 / m²) ≈ $790 / sq ft (Boligsiden and Finans Danmark, second quarter of 2026), and this district sits above it. Rent is largely set by the market, and Denmark does not publish a per-city 2-room figure, so we show a market asking level of around 12 000 DKK / mo (about €1,600 / mo) (BoligPortal, 2026) as a guide; much older stock is rent-regulated and cheaper.

The honest downsides
Price and polish. Østerbro is one of the most expensive districts in the city, and it is calm to the point of sedate, so the same quiet that families want can feel dull to anyone after a livelier scene.
Uneven transit at the fringes. Ydre Østerbro and the pockets between Metro stops lean on buses, and Nordhavn is a large, ongoing building site, so the new waterfront is not yet the finished neighborhood it will be.
Crime and safety
Østerbro is one of the safest, most settled parts of the city, low-footfall and residential, and in practice it sits below the city average, and Denmark does not publish neighborhood-level crime figures, so there is no local number.
