First impressions
Viksäng sits on the peninsula east of the Västerås centre, tucked between the mouth of the Svartån and the Västeråsfjärden arm of Lake Mälaren. It is a settled residential district, mostly three to five storey apartment blocks from the 1960s and 70s with later housing filling in around them, set among leafy streets and green space with the water never far away. The name means roughly the meadow by the inlet, and the geography still reads that way: high above a wooded slope, a couple of hundred metres from the lake.
The district has an older history too. The Västmanlands regiment was stationed here from 1906 to 1927, and several of the old barracks buildings still stand, some restored into some of the city's more characterful flats, with Kaserngatan and Regementsgatan carrying the military past in their names. The centre of Viksäng gathers the everyday services, a grocer, a pharmacy, a café and a healthcare centre, in one small hub.
This is a calm, green, water's-edge neighborhood that trades the buzz of the centre for space and quiet.
Who lives here, and what the streets look like
The mix is broad and family-leaning. Viksäng draws households who want room and green space near the city, with children, older residents and working couples sharing the same blocks. It is a normal, lived-in residential district rather than an enclave of any one group, and it is calmer and greener than the inner city.
The streetscape is practical post-war housing softened by trees and lawns: apartment blocks in brick and render, set back among green courtyards and paths, with the restored regiment buildings adding older texture at the heart of the district. Two statistical areas, Östra and Västra Viksäng, make up the district, but on the ground it reads as one leafy, low-key neighborhood that slopes gently down toward the water.
Getting around
Viksäng leans on the bus and the bike. It is out on the peninsula rather than a walk from the centre, but a VL city bus or a flat cycle reaches Stora torget in roughly ten to fifteen minutes, and Västerås is flat and easy to ride. Local transit is city buses only, with no tram or metro anywhere in Västerås, and the district hangs off one main corridor back toward town, so frequency and evening service are worth checking for your own stop.
The bigger picture is the train. From Västerås Centralstation, a short ride or cycle away, regional and SJ trains reach Stockholm Central in about an hour and Stockholm Arlanda in roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter, which is part of why people settle out here and commute.se and sj.se.

Daily life
Day to day, Viksäng is comfortable and self-contained. The district centre covers the everyday shop, with an ICA and a Coop, a pharmacy, a café and a pizzeria within a short walk, and a healthcare centre and library close by. The rhythm is a cycle or bus to work, a walk down through the trees to the Mälaren shore, and a fika at the local konditori. It is thinner on a proper high street than the inner districts, so a bigger or specialist run, or a night out, still means a ride into the centre. For food delivery, Foodora, Wolt and Uber Eats all cover the area.

Schools and families
Viksäng is built for families, and the green streets, playgrounds and nearby beach make it easy going with children. It has its own municipal year-9 school, Viksängsskolan, which runs grades 7 to 9 with a sports profile and posted a year-9 meritvärde of 217.5 out of 340 (Skolverket via Skolkoll, läsåret 2024/25), a little below the national average. Västerås has free school choice, so this is the nearest school rather than a fixed catchment, and places at popular schools fill early, so it is worth checking admission and the alternatives before you sign a lease or purchase. Only lower secondary has a clean local outcome, so that is the level we score.
Kids Friendly. Flat, green and calm, with playgrounds between the blocks, its own schools and healthcare at the district centre, and the swim beach and forest at Johannisberg close by for weekends.
Pet Friendly. The leafy streets, the forest paths down to the water and the Johannisberg recreation area make this easy dog-walking territory, with the Mälaren shore a few minutes away; the housing is mostly flats, so private outdoor space is limited.
Green space, leisure and eating out
Green space and water are the whole appeal here. The wooded slope and paths lead down to the Mälaren shore, and just south the Johannisberg recreation area adds a gently sloping sandy swim beach, a nature reserve, deciduous-forest walking trails and a lakeside campground, all within easy reach. Leisure leans toward the outdoors, a swim in summer, a forest walk, a cycle along the water, with the full spread of Västerås culture and nightlife a short ride into the centre. Eating out in the district is modest and local, a neighborhood pizzeria and the café at the centre rather than a restaurant strip, with far more choice in town.
What it costs
Viksäng sits around the Västerås middle. Recent flat sales run roughly 20,000 to 27,000 kr per m² (Hemnet slutpriser, Viksäng), bracketing the wider Västerås city average bostadsrätt of about 24,015 kr per m² (Svensk Mäklarstatistik, February 2026). You pay for a calm, green, water's-edge home rather than a premium address, and it is well below the central and inner districts, where flats run far higher. First-hand rents are set city-wide rather than per neighborhood, so no Viksäng figure is published, and there is no clean per-area second-hand average either. As with most bostadsrätter, expect a monthly housing-association fee (the avgift) on top of the price, which varies a lot by building.
