Totoriškės

Part of Trakai. locally just “The mainland town”

Long Story ShortReadHide
  • What it is: the everyday, mainland side of Trakai along Vytauto gatvė toward Lake Totoriškių, where the supermarket, schools, rail links and most ordinary housing actually sit.
  • Who it suits: local families and rail commuters who want a real town to live in, with the castle and kibinai a 15-minute walk away rather than on the doorstep.
  • What it costs: no per-area figure is published, so we show a Vilnius-region anchor of about 3 019 EUR / m² ≈ $320 / sq ft to buy, with ordinary mainland flats sitting below the lakeside premium.
  • What people complain about: it is plain next to the peninsula, and specialist shopping, healthcare and work still mean a trip to Vilnius.

First impressions

Totoriškės is Trakai without the postcard. Along and off the main road, Vytauto gatvė, you find Soviet-era and newer low-rise apartment blocks, single-family houses with gardens, the town's schools and sports facilities, and the Maxima supermarket, thinning out toward Lake Totoriškių and the woods on the southern edge. The name Totoriškės, "place of the Tatars", recalls the Crimean Tatars that Grand Duke Vytautas settled near Trakai around the same time as the Karaims.

Be honest about what this is: in a town of 5,000 it is really "the rest of the town" more than a bounded district, and it blends straight into the old town a short walk north. We treat it as the everyday-household side, set against the tourist peninsula and the manor estate.

The appeal is practical. This is where daily life in Trakai actually happens, and where the rail link into Vilnius is closest to hand.

Who lives here, and what the streets look like

This is the resident core of Trakai: local Lithuanian families and working people, plus the district's notable Polish minority, over a quarter of Trakai district claims Polish ethnicity, and Russian speakers. The historic Karaim community, 192 people nationally in the 2021 census, is centred on the old-town peninsula rather than here. Per-area demographics are not published at this grain.

The streets are ordinary and lived-in: low apartment blocks, houses with gardens and allotments, and the main road with its shops and services. It is functional rather than pretty, with the drama of the lakes and castle kept for the short walk onto the peninsula.

Getting around

This is the most connected part of town. Trakai railway station and the bus stops are on this mainland side, giving the direct regional train to Vilnius in roughly 35 to 40 minutes, the classic day-trip route run in reverse by commuters. Vilnius Airport is about 30 km east. A car is normal for anything beyond town, and it is a walkable and cyclable 15 to 20 minutes to the old town.

Daily life

This is where daily shopping happens. The town's Maxima supermarket on Vytauto gatvė and the everyday retail and services around it serve this side, with the kibinai cafés and the sights a short walk onto the peninsula. For food delivery, Wolt and Bolt Food are the European apps to check, and coverage is best here on the built-up mainland if anywhere, but it is still thin: Wolt has no Trakai page and does not appear to serve the town, and Bolt Food lists Trakai as a service city though its venue list is unconfirmed, so it may be limited or seasonal, verify in-app.

Schools and families

This is the family side of Trakai, and the town's schools, including the Trakai Vytautas Magnus gymnasium, sit on this mainland side along with the sports facilities. Lithuania publishes annual brandos egzaminai state-exam results by school, so a quality score can be added in a future pass. It is the sort of gap we would rather flag than guess at, which is part of why we build these Trakai guides the way we do. Check the specific schools and their catchment before you sign a lease or purchase.

Kids Friendly. This is where the town's schools, sports facilities and family housing actually are, with the lakes and national park a short walk away.

Pet Friendly. Gardens, quiet residential streets, Lake Totoriškių and the woods on the town edge make this easy, low-traffic dog country.

Green space, leisure and eating out

Green space is still close even on the everyday side. Lake Totoriškių and the woods on the southern edge sit right here, and the whole lake system and the castle are a short walk or ride away, all inside Trakai Historical National Park. The residential streets carry gardens and allotments. Eating out means walking onto the peninsula for kibinai at Senoji kibininė or the lakeside terrace at Apvalaus stalo klubas.

What it costs

No per-area price or rent is published for Trakai, so treat the figures beside this article as labelled Vilnius-region anchors, not Totoriškės averages. Buying in the Vilnius region runs about 3 019 EUR / m² ≈ $320 / sq ft on the Ober-Haus index, and ordinary mainland flats here sit below the lakeside and old-town premium, roughly around or under that average. For rent we show the Vilnius fallback of about 554 EUR / mo for a 1-bedroom outside the centre; this mainland side is where the few real long-term Trakai rentals are most likely to be, so confirm on Aruodas or city24.

The honest downsides

Plain, and it is "the rest of the town". It lacks the charm and waterfront drama of the peninsula. It is functional housing and a main road, and an evening out means walking to the old town.

Small-town remoteness and park limits. Vilnius is close, but specialist shopping, healthcare and most work still mean the trip in, and even here the national-park status limits new building. Summer tourist traffic clogs the approach roads.

Crime and safety

Trakai is a small, quiet lake town, and this everyday side reads as calm and residential. Lithuania publishes registered crime only nationally and by county or municipality, not for a town of 5,000 or its individual quarters, so there is no standalone Totoriškės figure. For scale, Lithuania recorded about 2.7 intentional homicides per 100,000 residents in 2024 (UNODC), and nearby Vilnius sits in the low-crime band on perception indices. The fuller picture is on the city safety page.

Is this you?

If you want to actually live in Trakai, with a supermarket, schools and a fast train into Vilnius, and you are happy to walk 15 minutes for the castle and the kibinai, Totoriškės is the practical choice. If you want the wooden heritage streets and lake-on-both-sides setting and can live with thin services, the old town at Senamiestis is the same small town at its most scenic.

How we source this

How we put this together. Gathered on the ground by our local field team and written up by the Apraiz research team. Every figure above carries its own source and date. The scores are not computed by the build; walking and transport will use open map and transit data first, then Apraiz's own model. We update prices quarterly, transport and amenities twice a year, and school data when the source publishes.
