Long Story ShortReadHide
- What it is: Klaipėda's late-19th-century New Town north across the Danė, built along the 3 km spine of Herkaus Manto street, the city's commercial and civic heart of German merchant houses, the university and the main shops.
- Who it suits: people who want the fullest central life, the mall, the university and the main streets on the doorstep, and do not mind traffic and bustle for it.
- What it costs: around 1 950 EUR / m² ≈ $210 / sq ft to buy at the Klaipėda city average, the merchant core dearer and the northern blocks cheaper.
- What people complain about: the traffic and parking pressure along the commercial spine, and the plain Soviet blocks at the northern end.

First impressions
Herkaus Manto is the spine, running about 3 km from Atgimimo (Rebirth) square northward, and it carries the character of the district. Along and around it stand late-19th-century merchant residences and monumental public buildings: the neo-gothic German Royal Post of 1893 with its big tower on Liepų street, the tree-lined Liepų boulevard, and, at the north end, the Gothic Revival German barracks of 1907, now the main campus of Klaipėda University.
The honest note is that character is uneven. The merchant core is handsome, but the far northern end slides into Soviet functionalist housing, a sharp contrast with the 19th-century streets, so the district reads as two things at once: a dignified commercial centre and a plainer residential fringe.
Who lives here, and what the streets look like
This is a broad urban mix: working residents and families in the apartment streets, students and staff around the university, and professionals and shoppers drawn to the commercial centre. It is where much of the city's everyday central life happens.
The streetscape moves from red-brick merchant grandeur and boulevard trees near the centre to functional apartment blocks further north. The Danė, the Old Town and the ferry are a short walk or ride south, so you are never far from the water even in the busiest part of town.
Getting around
Naujamiestis sits on the city bus and route-minibus network, with Herkaus Manto the main axis, and it is flat and walkable for central errands. Klaipėda has no tram or trolleybus. The railway station on Priestočio street is within the district's reach, with intercity rail inland to Kaunas and Vilnius, though the trip is several hours, so longer journeys usually start at Palanga Airport about 30 km north. The Smiltynė ferry to the Curonian Spit is a short ride south.

Daily life
Daily life here is the strongest in the city. Herkaus Manto and the centre carry the main shops, banks, cafes and restaurants, and Akropolis Klaipėda, one of the region's largest malls, sits in the district and covers full chain retail, groceries and services. The Old Market a short walk south adds fresh produce. For food delivery, Wolt and Bolt Food both cover the city, and coverage is at its best in this built-up centre.
Local Places Worth Knowing
Independent and close by, chosen on merit. Nobody pays to appear here.
The 1893 neo-gothic red-brick post office with its tower and carillon, the New Town's signature building.
A well-known steakhouse on the Herkaus Manto central spine, a reliable sit-down dinner in the heart of the city.
A central gastro-pub and craft-beer spot off Herkaus Manto, for a relaxed meal and a local brew.
The city's fresh-food market, a short walk south across the Danė in the Old Town, for produce and everyday goods.

Schools and families
Central Klaipėda has a good spread of schools, and families choose among them rather than being tied to one strict catchment. Lithuania does publish per-school state-matura (brandos egzaminai) results, so a fair ranking is possible in a later pass, but we would rather flag that gap than post a number we have not scored yet. That honesty is part of why we build these Klaipėda guides the way we do. Check the specific schools and their admission before you sign a lease or purchase.
Kids Friendly. The most practical central district for families, with the fullest shops, the university, the Sculpture Park and Liepų boulevard, though it is busy and traffic-heavy along the main spine.
Pet Friendly. The Sculpture Park, the tree-lined Liepų boulevard and the central streets give everyday dog-walking, with the river and beaches a short trip. Standard city leash rules apply and dogs are restricted in marked beach swimming zones in summer; there is less private garden than in a house district.
Green space, leisure and eating out
The Sculpture Park (Skulptūrų parkas), laid out on a former cemetery, is the district's green set-piece, with dozens of modern sculptures, and the tree-lined Liepų boulevard runs nearby. The Danė and the Old Town waterfront are a short walk south, and the sea and Spit beaches a short trip or ferry away. Eating out is the city's fullest, from the Momo Grill steakhouse to the Herkus Kantas gastro-pub, with the Clock Museum among the cultural stops between meals.
What it costs
Klaipėda is cheaper than Vilnius but rising fast. Buying runs about 1 950 EUR / m² ≈ $210 / sq ft at the city average (Ober-Haus, April 2026, up 10.6% year on year). Per-district figures are not published, so treat the merchant core as sitting at or above that line and the northern Soviet blocks below it. For rent, Lithuania publishes no official per-city figure, so we show a market estimate of about 520 EUR / mo for a central one-bedroom (Numbeo, June 2026), with central units at the top of the range.
Weather and climate

The honest downsides
Busy and traffic-heavy. As the commercial spine, Herkaus Manto and the centre carry the city's traffic, parking pressure and everyday bustle, so it is less quiet than the seaside or the Old Town.
Soviet edges. The northern end slides into plain Soviet functionalist blocks that lack the charm of the merchant core, so the district is uneven in character and the address you pick within it matters.
Crime and safety
Klaipėda reads as a moderate-to-low-crime port city, and the busy central district feels lively rather than edgy. Lithuania publishes registered crime only nationally and by county and municipality, so there is no standalone Naujamiestis figure. For national context, violent crime is low, with intentional homicides at about 2.7 per 100,000 (UNODC, 2024). The fuller Klaipėda picture is on the city safety page.
Is this you?
If you want the fullest central life, the mall, the university and the main streets on the doorstep, Naujamiestis is the practical heart of the city. If you would rather have quiet, water and heritage over shops and traffic, the Old Town just south or seaside Melnragė will suit you better.
