Safety and crime in Kaunas

Kaunas is a safe city by international standards, the most ethnically Lithuanian of the big cities, and reads as calm day to day. Everyday crime is dominated by theft rather than violence, concentrated around the centre and Laisvės alėja. Lithuania's statistics portals blocked automated retrieval, so there is no clean per-10,000 registered-crime rate to show here; the one clean national figure is the low homicide rate, and none of it is broken down by neighborhood.

The useful split is between types. Pickpocketing and petty theft around the centre, Laisvės alėja and the Old Town are the everyday risk; serious violent crime is rare, and none of it is broken down by district.

Lithuania records crime through the police and the Informatikos ir ryšių departamentas (IRD), and publishes it nationally and by county, never by neighborhood, so one figure applies across a city's districts. Reporting is reasonably high, but a share of thefts and assaults still go unrecorded, so treat these counts as a floor rather than a danger signal.

Lithuania's crime statistics come from Statistics Lithuania (the Official Statistics Portal, osp.stat.gov.lt) and the Informatikos ir ryšių departamentas (IRD) under the Ministry of the Interior. Figures are national or by county, with no breakdown below county level.
